One of the great historians has passed on. Anyone who's had the fortune to meet or be taught by him is extremely lucky.

His War Walk programmes are still the best TV history I've seen.

RIP Richard

Author of some really good books too; another gifted man dies before his time.

RIP.

A man whose programmes and books I could watch and read till the cows come home.

As I said on the other thread on this subject, I fear that Richard Holmes will suffer from what I like to call the Mother Theresa Effect.

(Dying on the same day as someone less worthy but more famous. See also Farrah Fawcett.)

I didnt recognise his name, but instantly recognised his picture on the bbc article. Really good, interesting presenter who obviously knew his subject inside out. R.I.P

A great shame. He has presented some great TV and writtemn some great books. It's not that long since he retired from the army. What a pity.

Had the pleasure of working with him last year. An absolute Gent and gone far too young.

How sad, and far too young. I've much enjoyed his output over the years, erudite and informed with a great ability to convey his enthusiasm.

And without the massive egos of some other history TV presenters.
