Bit of background - I started working for a new company in November, on £23k a year. I left at the end of February and then re-joined at the beginning of this month on £26k. During my initial period of employment I only ever got 1 payslip, which showed 20% emergency tax. I never got anything in April or when I left the business to show how much I'd earned or paid in tax etc. I've just been told by our new accountant that he doesn't even think the business is registered for PAYE (this is a small business) - does this mean that the amounts I've been supposedly paying in tax have actually been going in the owners pockets? I lost the one payslip I had (stupid I know!) and never got any others so this is hard to prove - what's the best thing to do in this situation? Is it best to ask to be paid in cash and then sort my own tax payments out? I'm seeing the MD later and will be demanding answers as to where the approx £1500 in tax I paid over those few months went!

Cheers!

Didn't you get a P45 when you left in February?

Sounds like you might have been done over.

What you can do is enquire with HM Revenue and Customs giving all the details you can of the employer - the business name, its address etc.

I am sure they will be very interested to learn about a business that may be defrauding both their own staff and the exchequer.

You seem to indicate that you are still working for this same employer. What is happening now regarding your salary and tax? And don't forget the National Insurance side of things too.
