I was supposed to be picking up my new car today as Ive just been paid into my Santander business account (I paid my agency to send via chaps, the same day, no issues.)

Checked the Santander website for chaps payments and it says to go in store with ID and they can sort it out... So I pop in store and apparently they have no access to business accounts and it needs to be done by phone. So I call the tossers and as its my first chaps payment they need to send me a form to fill out and return.... by POST!! Kinda defeats the fast fking payment really. So im left with the standard 3/4 day stty online bks as they have not signed up to the fast payment system. I tried to log online this morning and the service is down so I called them, they said its fine and to keep retying.

Complete fking cowboys. Anyone else had bad experiences with them? Am I better off moving to another bank?

I wouldnt normally be so pissed off but they are getting in the way of me and my new motor frown

They have just about the worst record for customer service out there, irrespective of account type.
I'm surprised anyone would open an account with them at the moment.

(That being said, some of their mortgages aren't bad)

They've just written to the previous owner of our house (we've been here 14 years), and when I rang them to get them to correct whatever cock up has resulted in this the call centre woman told me that they won't accept my assertion that I live there and I have to go to one of their branches with ID.

Told them to get lost.

Whilst I agree that they are utterly st, they do subscribe to FPS.

I think though, that for the first payment you make to a recipient it has to go the traditional way and therefore takes 3 days. frown

This certainly made paying for my new car last week interesting... Luckily the seller was patient!
Santander need to get with the times.

seriously? 3 DAYS? I bought a car back in 2003, for 28k, and paid using my debit card(not showing off, just showing that its possible), why on this day and age does it take 3 days to make a GBP transfer in the same country ??

Santander are one of the worst banks you'll come across. I saw an advert a few years about which said all the right things, sounded like exactly what I needed for the business etc. 6 months later and after hearing endless excuses about why money wasn't transferred, or why things that should have taken a couple of days were taking 5, and the worst customer service possible, I switched it to Barclays. Not my first account with them, but by christ did I regret not going to them in the first place. By comparison, they're bloody brilliant.

Im in the same boat. The seller is being patient but cant believe that its taking 3 days+ for a simple online transfer.

How long did it take for your payment to go through?

I put mine in yesterday morning (10am) so Im ever hopeful for Thursday afternoon silly (but cant see this happening.)

I had processed the BACS payment (due to my car surprisingly costing more than £300) on line to the sellers account on Thursday AM. I assumed it should take a few hours, obviously I have myself to blame for this as I didn't notice the instruction to "allow four working days".

It was Tuesday of the following week before the funds were transferred. The chap wasn't best pleased as he wanted to shift the car over the weekend.

Hopefully you get sorted sooner!

Shockingly bad bank!

We were with them for just over a year while we saved for our deposit for a house. Couldn't wait to close the account. Customer service was horrendous.

They messed up the opening of the account so badly, the only way they could fix it was to close it and start again from scratch. It was such a farce the arranged for a hamper to be sent to us and we received £50 compensation - don't get me wrong, that was good but we had to make an appointment with the branch manager to get it sorted.

Will never use them again. As much as I don't like RBS (used to work for them) they do a good job (in my opinion). At lease their FPS has a limit of £10k, I think. We used it to send our deposit to the solicitor, free of charge.

It is worth it because they pay something like 3% on instant access savings, with barclays I'm getting like 0.5% and penalised if I make withdrawals I think.

In my view the golden rule to consider before implementing any financial decision is "How straightforward and quick will it be to get my money out?" In this respect Santander has a really dreadful reputation, so as far as I'm concerned, I have never considered putting any of my money there, however competitive their returns etc seem to be.

In fact, I had an old Abbey (aquired by Santander unfortunately) bank account with a really modest few £100s in it and last year it took me more than 5 weeks to achieve closure of the account and get my money from them. I won't bother to list the obstacles they put in the way to try and stop me from making the closure.

I see that Santander has just announced that they are "recalling" their call centres to the UK in order to improve their customer service levels. The BBC describes their current levels as very poor. This could be a good step but who knows if it will achieve anything. 500 new jobs in the UK will be created.

Well, good news. They money cleared this morning so I am the proud owner of my new car. I cant believe what a kerfuffle it has been to move my own money to another account in the same country.

To be fair when I called the business banking call centre to find out if the money will even clear this week they where pretty helpful and British. The lady I spoke to agreed that it should be doing the faster payments but recons it is down to the fraud teams decision to keep it slow encase anyone wants to retract a payment. rolleyes

Satander are appalling - I took a loan out from Aliance & Leicester (Satander) to buy a car, repaying it through my Cahoot current account (also Satander). Nine months into the loan I received a letter from A&L telling me I had not met the payment for that particular month. Odd because I had not changed anything in Cahoot and my income had not changed. So I contacted them, they implied I must have stopped the payment. Total bks why would I ? Anyway, restarted the direct debit with them again. One month later I receive another letter telling me I had defaulted on the loan again and that my credit rating was now at risk !!!!!. I contacted them again stressing to them that I was not at fault, the British call centre couldn't have given a flying fk. A&L blamed me and Cahoot blamed A&L. From that moment I immediately transferred everything to a new HSBC current account.
Then missed the first payment with HSBC (again I called A&L and paid manually with my new direct debit card)despite all the other new HSBC direct debits being paid. HSBC told me A&L had the problem. Eventually it was resolved with help from HSBC. I will never use Satander again as long as I have breath in my body. Their attitude was awful. Every time you call them they have no record of previous conversations. I have no idea if my credit rating ever suffered despite their threats. Use their products at your peril. If you ever need help due to a hitch/hick-up etc...you will rue the day you ever used their services. You have been warned !

acquiescence,

Based on my experience, your advice is excellent as far as Santander is concerned. I'll never use them due to problems I had after they acquired Abbey. Their rates may be eye catching bit the rest of their services are eye watering!

So presumably this move will make it easier for customers to tell Santander exactly how crap they think their service levels are! hehe

I left school 28 years ago and started a current account at the post office (Girobank)because I lived in a small village and the post office was the only place offering any sort of banking within walking distance, this turned into an Alliance and Leicester account which was OK, then last year it turned into Santander.

Last summerI arranged over the phone to withdraw £5500 in cash from my local branch and when I arrived the girl on the desk refused point blank to give me the money, basicly "computer says no" then when I asked to speak to someone else she said "you can, but you still wont get your money" I did speak to someone else and I did get my money, I also got £30 for the way I was treated after I complained.

Not long after that they stopped paying interest on my current account and started advertising a really good interest rate for new current account customers.

Then I moved my current account. I will never ever use them again.
