This has probably been done before but the search is down at the moment.

I have recently opened a First Direct account. All the direct debits got moved over with no problem except one for a loan with Sainsbury's Finance.

Loan payment was due on 18th of this month. Instruction to transfer debit was sent (and received) on 11th of this month by FD. FD advise me that it takes 3 days to transfer the DD details but they give 5 days to complete it. Basically it all goes through with enough time for Sainsbury's to take the payment.

Surprise surprise they have not taken the payment. They have charged me £25 late payment fee and stuffed up my credit rating! I paid by card on the 19th as soon as I saw they had not taken the amount by DD. Whilst on the phone the woman from Sainsburys 'checked' the account details they had on the system to make sure they are right and surprise surprise they are the First Direct account details. I asked her then as they have the correct details of the new account why they hadn't taken the payment from it? She told me it wasn't fully set up yet!

Sainsbury's are telling me that it takes upto 14 days to set up a Direct Debit. I explained that they are not setting one up, it is simply being transferred from one bank account to another. They keep saying it takes 14 days and will not refund me or withdraw the bad credit report.

First Direct have been excellent and are sending me all the reports as evidence that Sainsbury's received the correct paperwork from them.

Any other advice you guys can give?
