Check out Oanda, Post Office is crap. If you have a cash a cheque near you then it's better to go there.

yes

For that sort of amount you should get better than tourist rates

Bank transfer?

It was 2011 last time I checked.

Customs are a bit funny about folk with large amounts of cash, the dogs will be all over you.

Are you talking cash?
Any cash withdrawal around £10000 has to be questioned due to money laundering regulations and I'm not sure if it has to be declared when crossing borders. Sniffer dogs at customs are trained to detect cash!
I spend a lot of time in France and need to convert £ to €s regularly. Any of the commercial exchange companies will be close to the rate on the day.
Could you use a credit/debit card with a limit arranged before travelling or try a pre loaded card like FairFx?

Why? The law states:
You only need to declare cash if you are entering or leaving the UK from outside the European Union (EU) and carrying cash of 10,000 euros or more, or the equivalent in other currencies.

Oh, and at which customs would you be going through on EU flight anyway?
You joking about the dogs right?

Hi guys,

Like I say sorry if it's a stupid question but this is all foreign to me, excuse the pun!

It's a used car from jo public so debit card is out of the question. I guess bank transfer may be an idea, how would that work on his behalf would he be responsible to any fees?

Just a general description for terminal etc and the customs are still around looking for drugs and people of course.you can still be pulled over at the port and be asked to explain yourself if they feel like it.

Dogs at Stanstead are trained to sniff cash but I think the limit is15000€ so OP not over the limit.

A few years back tried to buy a car from French auction, UK reg seized at Spanish border carrying a load of cash from a dodgey house sale usually cars are confiscated due to drugs. Last year a big load was seized locally after they had been tracked from the Spanish coast which must be 1000 kilometres

try somewhere like http://www.smartcurrencyexchange.com/

they are used to dealing in large money tranfers when people buy properties abroad etc, so should get good rates, far better than tourist rates and can do all the transfers for you too.

Check the link above. There is NO limit on cash within the EU.

Interesting, I was questioned by some German fuzz a few years ago with them asking the usual 10k question.
