The P45 is a legal document and is needed for proof purposes. Find it.

I think, if you complete a Self Assessment you'll get a refund - do some research.

It is easy to reclaim but you will need the P45, if lost you can ask for a copy from your ex-employer.

An employee normally will not have to submit a Self Assessment tax return. The information on the P45 is pretty crucial and has been said, if you have genuinely mislaid the original, your former employer should be able to provide you with a copy of the P45 or at least the data that was shown on the P45.

Once you have this information, you should be able to telephone HMRC and explain the situation to them.
