Morning all,

I unfortunately lost my job last year, and had a short period (1 week) when I was being paid Job Seekers allowance. This week seems to have completely messed up my tax. When I started a new contract I sent my umbrella company the P45 that was sent to me when I stopped claiming Job Seekers allowance.
After several weeks I noticed that my was lower than I thought it should be ( my hours over these weeks were all over the place, hence the reason I did not notice) I spoke to the Umbella company who said " Oh yeah, that because you are on a week 1 tax code) you need to call HMRC and give them the our company tax code" spent an hour on the phone ( on hold waiting to speak to someone) when I finally got though, gave them correct details and assumed that this would be an end to it. But no. Was told that they needed the P45 from my last job, which I finally managed to get hold of and sent of to them. I am now being told that because they have conflicting information form HMRC on P8 (?) they cannot change anything.
I will be dumping my umbrella company this afternoon as they clearly are not advising me in the way that they should, but can anyone please tell me what I need to do to sort this mess out?

Thanks

Eric Mc

You are an employee of the umbrella company. When you handed them the P45 from the Job Centre they were supposed to submit the P45 details to HMRC. HMRC are then supposed to notify both you and your employer of the correct code to use when calculating your PAYE. My hunch is that the umbrella company has not carried out their part of the procedure and have simply put you onto a Week1/Month 1 basis.

You might be better off just leaving matters until the end of the tax year and then resolving the situation once 5 April 2012 is out of the way.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer I would suggest that completing a Self Assessment tax return for 2011/12 might be the best and quickest way of sorting and reconciling your tax affairs after the end of the year.

Thanks Eric. Much appreciated as always.
