[Mods: not sure if this is the right place. Please feel free to move somewhere more suitable]

Folks,

I have an offer on the table for an ex-pat role in Norway for two years. I am considering therefore, the possibility of buying LHD cars over here in Blighty, driving them over to Norway and running for two-three months, before punting them on. The intent of course being to turn a little profit as well as give me something to do while I establish myself over there.

A couple of questions then:

1) Has anyone done this before on here?
2) Is it that simple?
3) At what rate can I expect to be taxed on the profits (i.e. any tax over and above gross income)?
4) Any other pitfalls?

Cheers beer

Not directly related, but you do know that Norway is a dear hole? I've worked in Oslo for last 6 months, bloody pricey

Assuming no duty issues I'd have thought there is scope to make some money at this

GP I wouldn't bother importing anything in from the UK. It will cost you the same in tax as buying one here. I wanted to bring my old '99 3 series touring over when I moved and they wanted £7k in import tax. I see some has already posed the toll.no website. They have a calculator on there where you can work out what it will cost you. finn.no is the best place to look for anything in Norway. It is expensive out here but well worth it imo.

This is the link to the calculator http://www.toll.no/templates_TAD/RegistrationTax.a...

Import tax is high. Friend of mine went to work there and was going to take his boxster, when he looked into it the costs were horrible.

But as an expat, I thought I'd be classed as temporary resident and therefore avoid the taxation for bringing my own car(s) into the country?

This is the link you need http://www.toll.no/templates_TAD/Article.aspx?id=1...

So you get up to year driving on UK plates. After that you have to register on Norwegian plates and pay the import tax. I doubt you would be able to give a car away if it wasn't register on Norwegian plates...

Ah OK, thanks.

So a year on UK plates and then I haver to either sell up or pay the import tax?

Not really an option then.

Nope. They like you to buy everything in Norway smile It is a little behind here. Most of the shops still close on Sundays smile And the speed limits and stupidly low and highly enforced. Great place tho.

Something else to look into, I have family over in Norway and I know they go to Sweden to buy cars and import them that way - apparently far cheaper?!..

Also depends on the car (as the linky above will show). When I lived there I thought about importing my Golf over. £6k import tax, worth more than the actual car at the time.

Wouldn't necessarily rule it out though. The equivalent used Golf was £18K....
