Just a quickie! Can a company charge you vat if they are not vat regesterd,how can I find out if they are?

No. Ask them. They will have a VAT registration number if they are registered. Which can be verified here.

I am sure EricMc will be along shortly to correct me if I'm wrong.

A company cannot charge VAT of they are not VAT registered.

There should be a VAT number on the invoice (if they want to charge you VAT)

When they charged me vat a year ago they said they were waiting for a vat no,never had the invoice with the vat no on
Just checked there web site can't find vat no on it

I have come across people charging vat whilst waiting for their registration to complete. They then retrospectively provided the vat number when fully registered.

If they have not subsequently registered fior VAT, they have overcharged you and you should ask for the extra amount you paid back.
