Tax return - where does this go please?
Discussion
To support Eric. Poor information is too readily given out by the Revenue. To clarify - HMRC are not allowed to give tax advice; they can help you complete a tax form, but they cannot tell you how to save tax or advise how to structure your tax affairs to your advantage.
A good accountant is a sound investment, who can help save tax and provide peace of mind. This one finished work at 10pm tonight. There are plenty of poor accountants out there - choose on personal recommendation, not on cost alone.
Be aware too that HMRC software is "clunky" by design - by law they provide a basic product to help you comply with your obligations. A commercial package is worth the investment and for a single tax return is surprisingly cheap. Most accountants will invest in a quality package to enhance their service - it astounds me that there are some who use the Revenue product.

I only have one client who missed the deadline. They sent me the information is such a mixed up state that it was impossible to turn the mess into a sensible set of figures in time. The cliemt has acknowledged this and is resigned to paying the £100 penalty.
Otherwise, all my returns were in by last Thursday.

The deadline isn't for another 35 hours. But you're charging them the penalty anyway?
Dodgy bloody clients - more like.
Or, in this case, scatty and disorganised clients. I'll jump through all sorts of hoops on behalf of my clients but letting me have tax return information in such a state that it is unusuable means there's not much I can do when the time scale is tight.
