Tax Code for Wrong Job

Hoping someone can suggest something. The wife got a tax code for a job which she doesnt have at a company she has never worked for. All the personal details are correct and the tax office helpfully claim she has worked there for 2 years and promptly hung up on my wife.

Has anyone got any suggestions how to deal with this? My first thought might be to contact the company involved or will it just be a long drawn out argument with HMRC?

Her actual employer might need to contact HMRC too.

You may want to do a credit check with Experian or similar as her identity may have been cloned for fraudulent reasons ie loans, credit cards etc.

Workmate has had this twice. Being taxed extra due to having a 2nd job he knew nothing about. Work sorted it out in the end
