Credit card details compromised
Discussion
Just had a phone call from my bank saying they're cancelling my credit card and sending me a new one as the card number has been compromised. It doesn't look like anything has gone out that shouldn't have but i'll keep a further eye out on that. Now, what i wanted to know is that due to me only using my credit card in very few places it could be quite easy for the bank to find out where the card details were sold/compromised. Does anyone in the know have any idea what i could do to report or do anything to help? Or should i just leave it be?
I did see on the Internet somewhere that there were 10 million card numbers stolen that were found in New York. I was told that my card numbers were 'on a list' of compromised cards. Just hope when my statement comes through in the post nobody has been treating themselves on my behalf.

Sounds similar to what I went through a couple of years ago - police informed Mastercard and Visa of all the card numbers stolen and the CC companies pro-actively contacted the customers to advise they wanted to close the card and issue a new one as a precaution. Also I had to advise if there were any unfamiliar transactions - there wasn't.If issuers see multiple fraudulent transactions appearing they can look back and find the common point of compromise. Then they can then see what other cards were used at that terminal and either cancel the cards or apply a warning accordingly.
I know because I built the system for one of the big UK issuers.
