I've never had a company, but I do live overseas. HM Revenue have seen fit to send me a tax return for overseas companies liable to UK tax.

Anybody else get sent the wrong form for 2011/12?

D'oh.

Is it a Self Assessment tax return for personal income tax or some sort of Corporation Tax return for a limited company?

It should have been the former, but was the latter!

Lots of people who are on PAYE complete Self Assessment tax returns.

Look on it as a good thing. There have been quite a few massive PAYE/Tax Coding cockups in recent years which could have been avoided if the taxpayers completed a tax return.

What company name have they quoted on the face of the form?

If you end up paying them each time you complete a self assessment tax return, it is obious that the PAYE system isn't collecting the correct amount of tax and that the SA return is necessary in order to make sure the cotrrect tax amounts are paid.
As I said, the PAYE system in itself is not always adequate enough to ensure a taxpayer pays his taxes correctly and am SA return is required each year to sort out any extra bits and pieces that need to be taken into account.

Are you a higher rate taxpayer?

nope....
80% of my working life has been PAYE without these forms all fine
Then I worked for myslef for a while and it got royally buggered via self assessment and the huge mistakes IR made last year/year before...
My confidence is low with them, but I do as I'm told...

If, as you claim, you are NOT a higher rate taxpayer, why should it be that every time you complete a return you find that you have underpaid tax?

This indicates that there is something wrong with the way PAYE is being calculated on your salary. It sounds like your PAYE Codings are not right.

Have you investigated as to WHY you consistently underpay tax under PAYE. There has to be a reason.

Do you get professional assistance when preparing your return?

no I don't.
As I say up until about 2009 I never had any dealings with IR really... then I worked for myself and andsubmitted my ins and outs OCD style... and they clobbered me..
A yearc later I get all of that back thank god, but I think, as you say the too's and fro's of all this have left my tax code in a sorry state hence the attention I get.

I'll call them talk it over and complete it if necessary.

The point is that, if you are a basic rate taxpayer with only salaried income taxed under PAYE, you should pay the correct tax under the PAYE system and there would be no need to complete Self Assessment tax returns.

If the PAYE system is not doing the job properly, then the fault must be with your codings.

What was your PAYE coding for 2011/12?

What is your PAYE coding for 2012/13?

Do you know if these codings were/are correct?

I'll dig them out before ringing the IR, get all the issues dealt in one call hopefully, don't want to have to ring them again....

You'll be lucky smile

For the record, the standard codings for 2011/12 and 2012/13 are -

2011/12 - 747L Tax Allowances of £7,475

2012/13 - 810L Tax Allowances of £8,105

By the way, The Inland Revenuie ceased to exist quite a few years ago. They are now known as HM Revenue and Customs or HMRC.

No name, just an employer reference: 951/01/GA28752 (I think this is correct, but it was partially illegible)...

Is the employer reference correct?

Who is the employer?

Is this to do with PAYE rather than a Corporation Tax?

Is this a notice to complete an Employer's Annual Return?

1) I'm retired in France, so no employer
2) previous employer was Lloyds TSB (I don't know if the ref is correct)
3&4) I can't answer those...

I was just concerned if it was in respect of the Employer's Annual Return Form P35. This has a very early submission deadline date of 19 May and HMRC fine people £100 for every month that the return is late. I'm not saying that you are liable to such penalties but HMRC act like a snowball rolling down a mountain. Once they issue a form, they seem inacapable of actually cancelling the pebalty process related to that form. So, if you send the form back incomplete, unsigned or in the wrong format or just ignore it, they will start the fining process.

Eventually, if it turns out that the form should never have been issued in the first place, then they will, eventually, cancel the form and any penalties. However, it could be only after months of grief and frustration.

Keep us up to date on what transpires.
