Contract Hire - Private Number Plate

I am about to take delivery of a new BMW on a contract hire through BMW finance. I did not realise that in such deals the hire company are the keeper. The BMW dealer has told me that I need to apply to have my number transferred to BMW finance as a 'nominee'.
Does anybody here know anything about this process? I would like to use my number while I have the car but don't want to lose it.

The process is a PITA but doable.
For the duration of your contract the lease company will effectively "own" your plate, in as much as nobody but the DVLA owns plates.
You MUST remember to instigate the process to place the number back on retention well before the end of your lease. The DVLA being what they are I'd recommend two months.
There will be no problem with a reputable finance company but DO NOT let the car go back at the end of the lease without sorting things out. The onus is very much on you.
