A relative needs to transfer a relatively small amount of money to my UK bank account from hers in Canada. What details do I need to supply her with, just account number and sort code? Also as its under £100 what would be the most cost effective way to do this without incurring a lot of fees? Thanks

International bank transfer fees are horrible for an amount of that size.

Quickest would probably be to have them post to you $160+$10 via airmail, and convert it at a bureau de change... the extra $10 to cover commission charges.

Tell her to post you a cheque if you can wait a few days.

Up to £25 for electronic transfer. If it is needed quickly I think you'd also need an iban(?) number.

So if I just convert my amount to CAD and ask her to post a cheque I can just pay that in at my bank? Assume I'll have to pay some fees on this as well?

It's a bit of a silly amount relating to a hamper she asked me to make up for my parents who are not well but she is insisting on paying.

To be safe she needs the following details:

Name of account holder
Name of Bank
Bank SWIFT Code
IBAN Number

Personally it would be cheaper use someone like Western Union or suchlike......

Western Union is the way forwards for that sort of transaction.

A foreign cheque will take many weeks to clear, a bank transfer will cost a lot in fees.
