It is possible I'm having severe brain fade but I'm trying to figure out why Thames Water have just put my direct debit payment up from £11 to £23 a month.

Here's my latest bill

I just can't get it to add up.

The opening balance is £24.51.

Water charge is £58.34 then waste water at £48.02.

I paid in £79 via the monthly installments.

Closing balance is £51.87

Am I missing something? £24.51+£79=£103.51. £58.34+£48.02=£106.36. I make that a final balance of -£2.85

I'm fully prepared to wear a PH Dunce cap when you point out my obvious mistake.

I make that correct.

So £24.51 - £79 = -£54.49

-£54.49 + £58.34 + £48.02 = £51.87

Cheers Mark, so the £24.51 brought forward is in debit not credit?

I knew it'd be something simple.

I'll have to go and check my other bills to see why I'm suddenly not paying enough, either it's a leak or they've put their prices up a lot.

You were paying too little before. £11 a month is £132 a year.
The bill you have just had is for roughly a half year and is £106. A full year at that rate s £212. Plus £50 odd brought forward = £260+
£23 a month x 12 = £276, so in about 10-12 months you will have caught up the £50 odd arrears and it will reduce to about £18 a month.

Yep, standing charge is the "fixed charge" on the bill so about the same as you.

Thanks to everyone for the help, makes more sense now.
