Looking at the HMRC site, it says I need to use commercial software to fill my tax return as I worked abroad last year. Is this possible myself or should I be ringing an accountant first thing tomorrow?
Assumed it would be straight forward like last year....

You can buy tax return software that is HMRC accredited from about £15 - there are links given on the HMRC website.

Alternatively you could get an accountant to do thus for you and hopefully ensure that all reliefs for overseas taxes suffered are made.

There are a few if us on here.

By the way, are you referring to your 2011/12 Tax Return? If so it is already late and you would have incurred a £100 penalty.

As an aside, there was a new set of proposals regarding residency, it's very doubtful you've changed domicility, from the revenue that came out 18th December and should pass into law in the 2013 Finance Bill.

I'd suggest that all non-residents take some advice on this going forward. It could be costly not to.

I'd be grateful if someone could tell me how it's bloody meant to work now as well!

What do you mean by "last year" - last "tax year" (2011/12) or last calender year (31 December 2012)?

I use TaxCalc, which is very simple to use - but I only have relatively simple tax affairs (i.e. give me all my savings interest back).

I have a good working knowledge of the new rules - PM me if you want some explanation.

2 week extension - new one for me and I have been doing this for 20 years.

A beer says you still get the £100 penalty.

Rang up and said I'd forgotten my login details. Was told I could re-register and lose all my previous entries or get sent new user ID. She said I wouldn't get any penalties but would be charged interest if anything was outstanding so make an estimate contribution if I think I owe. Also said the deadline for penalties was now extended 2 weeks. Maybe she was lying. As 2 weeks is today, I'd say your beer was safe either way!

Watch out for any surcharges on tax payments relating to 2011/12 made after 28 February as well. I would be inclined to pay any taxes due NOW and file as soon as you can afterwards.

Thanks Eric. I'm confident I don't owe anything. All sorted now!
