"New ATM scam"
Discussion
This is doing the rounds on facebook currently with all the usual scaremongering. Is it real or another fake hue and cry for the gullible sheeple?

Fb photo caption says "Be aware of this new little ATM skimmer folks. They're getting more discreet so keep em peeled. Its part of a two piece system, very real. The other part sits discreetly above the card insertion slot. So slim you would never notice it. Very real folks sadly."

I thought this was fake as I can't remember using a cash point with a recessed pin pad that could then be stuck on top of.
Wouldn't they just build the surround, too?Although if that were the case, why make it separate from the surround?

Perhaps it is a fake designed specifically to be able to be photographed.

I'd not seen that particular one before but it seems it isn't new and is genuine

Have seen a few on documentaries where they made a whole new fascia for the machine replete with skimmer and pinhole camera. You'd never know.
I always cover my hand when entering the PIN and always give the card reader a tug first, not infallible but its something at least. I'd notice if my local ATM had been tampered with as its battered to buggery, cracked screen, buttons not working and has been for years!
Anyone know why with Chip and Pin cards the ATMs still rely on the magnetic strip? Can't be that hard to fit a separate slot for Chip reading which I assume is slightly more secure.

ISTR a Barclays security guy being interviewed on the radio about this - something to do with European compatibility or similar; the chip is very secure but some countries still don't use the chip!Hoofy said:

There is a standalone cash machine in our village shop which uses the chip. Would seem reasonable to build ATMs with both options.otolith said:

It's not the machine that is the issue but eh fact that your card still has a magnetic strip on it so that you can use it in other countries.otolith said:

Can you clone a card using a chip reader only?Hoofy said:
I'm not sure what you mean. If I were to scam using that machine, I'd attach something to scan the magnetic strip and something to record your PIN. Chances are, you're not going to use a card with just a chip.
The ATM with the chip reader doesn't swallow your card, it goes part way into a slot like a retail chip and pin machine - so it can't swipe the magnetic strip, and it would be obvious if it had been modified to do so.burwoodman said:
100% fake. think about why, very simple
If you are refering to the fact that pressing the buttons on the fake panel would mean the buttons on the real one would not be pressed then all it would take is a small pin to come out of the bottom of the top pad to push the lower buttons when you tap the pin in, the sensors would pick up the key strokes and the reader copies the card, simple tech.mat777 said:

that and the fact ive never seen a recessed key pad. why cant all machines be aware of tampering. it isnt rocket science
It's not recessed though is it, looks like a whole new covering fascia that has been cut to show people how it worksI wish people would read the whole thread before posting.

Ah, well it would be secure, obviously. Unless someone builds a fascia and the user doesn't twig when the entire thing gets sucked in.Gassing Station | Finance | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
