Investment Diversification Guide
Discussion
Hi guys,
Has anyone used a portfolio calculator tool or have any rules of thumb or similar they can share as a starting place for portfolio set up?
Just trying to work out a good place to start with splits of shares/property/cash/bonds etc. but will actually look into the actual investment vehicles separately and will, of course, do my own research. Finding the rules of thumb/calculators via Google just seems to bring up a sea or crappy articles!
Cheers

Hi Ringram - thanks for that link I'll look into it for my S+S ISA for sure. Quite like the look of the analytics as I'm a stats freak!
What I was hoping for initially though was a way to evaluate my macro position e.g. not just the individual ISA but to consider cash in bank, ISA's, money tied up in my house etc. to see where I should be looking to put new savings (admittedly I don't have any S+S therefore I think Nutmeg is at least an option for that part!)

Same principles IMO.
Did you run through the wizard, it will give you a model portfolio which is balanced and diversified. You can compare to what you have now.
Poke about on the site http://www.nutmeg.com/nutmegonomics/?p=2153
There is some reasonable info. It wont be a one stop shop though.
Otherwise Id think the best thing is to read lots. Asset correlation is pretty high these days, so diversification is easier said than done.

Found this from a shares ISA point of view :-

A tool to include cash and property in a wider model would be interesting.

Looks interesting, do you use it?Thing that always put me off funds are the rip off (introductory & ongoing) fees, the Agents were like sharks around ex-pats in the Middle East.
