Wondering if anyone can help me on this...

Checked my business account this morning and someone has done an international CHAPS transfer into my account of £2,018
I haven't invoiced anyone for that amount and I certainly don't have any international clients, the bank don't know where it's from or won't tell me, suspect the latter.

Question is, what do I do with it? Obviously not going to spend it, just going to shift it into my business savings account, but can it be taken out again by the bank or do they have to ask me for permission?

Bit of an odd one, but hope someone can answer it!

No doubt you'll get some correspondence from the sender at some point if they have made a mistake - it does happen from time to time I suppose. But I don't think the bank can reverse it. However, if it genuinely is a mistake and the money isn't meant for you, withdrawing it from the account can be considered as theft (I'd check with your bank on this, you might be okay to transfer it to another account.)

I have read in the past about people who have made payments to the wrong account. The recipient has had to be asked if it's ok for them to give the money back.

Plot thickens, called the bank again and after much waiting it seems to be from an insurance company which I've never had any dealings with. Natwest fraud department don't care about fraudulent deposits only fraudulent debits. Even after reminding them of the new money laundering laws they still couldn't care.

This happened to me a while ago.
First I thought whoopee free money
Then I thought it's not mine should move it to savings account or speak to the bank. While I was pondering the dileama for two or three days the money just disappeared again! No trace on the account no credit or debit showing. I guess the mistake had been spotted and corrected.

Don't spend it. Someone's reconciliation software will find it missing eventually.

I received some fees into a wrong account a couple of years back - the bank can remove it again if they are wholly sure that the original credit was erroneous.

Triffic. My bookkeeper paid £1k into the wrong account - wrong by one digit - and we have never been able to recover the money. Natwest the receiving bank ignored all correspondence & the ombudsman said it was our error, which we already sodding well knew.

That hurt us, it's easily £20k turnover to recover, but you know, free money. Whoopee.

Let me get this right. You spent time and money chasing your bank on a mysterious credit. Wack it in a high interest account and forget about it. You cant lose out on tht basis

Oh bog off, did you not see the Winky face? OP has clearly made extensive efforts to sort it out.

yes

Through a payroll error, my salary was paid into the wrong account a couple of months ago.. Massive issue for me, less so for HSBC...
Fortunately I work for an organisation big enough to be able to do an instant payment of my salary whilst they waited for the incorrect payment to be returned.

Are you aware of the new money laundering and bribery laws?

Last year I had an international transfer (mine) credited twice. It was in there for a week but sure enough it was reversed. I wouldn't touch that money.

And somebody has suggested throwing into a high interest account? Try finding one!!

Put it in a 1 year bond and make them wait for it while you claim the interest.
