There is really no need to use a solicitor, I've just done it with my parents and downloaded the forms and did it that way.

There are two, one for financial and one for health, they cost £130 each to register.

Cheers. How vital is this. My Pa - the person in question - already has his 'living will' sorted.
There's already someone local that's making some decisions to help him, and I (think) I trust her.

Local solicitor sorted out one for my MiL.

Cost was c£250. At that price, it wasn't worth buggering about doing it ourself.

Extremely important, IMHO. My father has vascular dementia and at the moment it means I can explain stuff to him but the I can do the paperwork. But the time may come when, for example, he needs care that he can easily afford but if I didn't have PoA it could be impossible for him to pay for it.

But we've done one for my mother as well, she may not have the same issues now but something could happen any day when she does.

That depends on who you are doing it for, getting a solicitor to do it usually means going to see a solicitor which, for an elderly person, can be stressful and difficult. Doing it myself wasn't about cost saving, it was a way of doing it that was more practical because I didn't have to get my parents to the solicitor to do it.

MiL (82) is in now in a care home following a stroke. Solicitor visited her.

Well that's great if you have a solicitor who will do that for what is essentially £120 after the fee to register. (Assuming it included that). But we don't have access to someone who would do that.

Thanks for this thread, wife and I are trying to sort this out with my MiL although we may be too late and have to go via court of protection which is long winded and expensive.
