Do you mortgage a house on your own on less than 25000 a year and if so how do you manage? I do it myself but luckily for now im on the firstbuy scheme so mortgage is quite cheap for another 4 years so for now i can manage.

Yes, but only because I had a 25% deposit, so I managed to get a decent rate.

The girlfriend and I are currently saving for a house.

We have a way to go yet though, she is a carer (9k a year)

I was an apprentice up until 2 weeks ago (8.5k a year) Im now unemployed.

We have saved 2.3k in the past 4 months on this wage which i don't think is too bad. But i highly doubt we'd be even close to buying a house, even on the first buyers government scheme. Makes it worse that we live in the South East. Cheapest house price in our area (the girlfriend wants to live within 30 mins of her parents house) we can find that is 'good enough' (obviously not setting our expectations high, but also don't want to live in a complete dump) is 180k. frown

Looks like i wont be leaving home till i am about 30.

No, everyone earns more than the national average. That's how they figure it out. rolleyes

Was that a serious question or just your attempt at humour?

Now you've made it, you've forgotten what it was like before you got there. Or was it all handed to you on a silver spoon?

I don't earn under 25k but pretty damn near it. Where I work there are around 30 employees, well over half will be on under 25k. That will changed when shifts are on but the work isn't there at the moment for that

Whoa... chill.

First of all the question is too general. Under 25k could be 1k/annum. OP could've been more specific. When was the mortgage taken out? Pre and post Lehman has massive different.

Where I work there are many people under 25k too but they can find a mortgage because they have worked hard for many years, unlike the scroungers who get free house without effort.

I was on less than 25k as was my wife when we bought our first house for 100k but this was 11 years ago so in today's money it was probably about 25k now (ish) per year each, we were both on circa 20k then.

I remember then our lifestyles being much more toned down then they are now and that was on 2 decent starter salaries and a relatively inexpensive house.

When I bought my first house in 2000 for £50000 (nice 3 bed semi), I dreamt of being on £25K! I seem to recall I earned around £16k at the time.

Not really what you asked for, but I bought a house with the wife with a combined income of 16k in 1998. The house was 39.5k by the way.

That was one of the deciding factors in joining up!
