I have never had a CC and pretty much never needed one. Only ever had one loan in the last 30 years, £800 for a raceboat about 10 years ago.

I now find I must have a credit rating and/or a card that I never want to use.

Any hints or tips?

Should always use a credit card (setup DD to pay off in full).

The reason is that it gives you greater protection under Credit Law as it's borrowed money, as opposed to your bank debit card where it's your own cash.

This, never buy anything online with a debit card, always use a CC for protection.

Another vote for always using a credit card. I've never paid interest on a credit card in my life. I have however disputed payment on purchases and used the car insurance that comes with it when renting cars.

I have also flown around the world on the miles earned using it and if you ever see me in a first class lounge it's not because I'm traveling on a first class ticket.

OP, having a credit card is not always a sign of being foolish with money. For some of us it is a sign of being wise.

The only way I would pay with a debit card online is if it's via Paypal, as you can dispute any transactions with Paypal.

Otherwise, I always use CC. Apart from the odd time with Amazon, because heck, it's Amazon.

Doesn't this protection only apply if the goods purchased are over £100? http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/...

I usually use my debit card for smaller online purchases and Tesco credit card for larger purchases.

Quite fancy earning air miles on a credit card but I fear I wouldn't spend enough to warrant getting a card (probably spend £400 a month on cards inc fuel)

Get a points based card e.g. RBS. You can swap for useful items such as cinema vouchers
