Hi,

Have been with my high street bank for 30+ years with no problems so when my daughter turned 18 and started work i took her to our local branch for her to open a account, this was 5 weeks ago and she supplied all the i/d forms requested.

Nothing heard for 5 weeks so she contacted them via phone and nobody could trace the application so today she went in and was told that they have declined her application but refused to say why.

This is so annoying that they could not be bothered to inform her by letter or phone and that they will not say why, there are no debts at our address, she has no other accounts other than a Building Society saving account from the age of zero and more importantly are concerned that her credit rating may be affected and also any other application at other banks may be affected.

What can we do ?

Feel like moving my account as so annoyed but it's a lot of hassle,

It shouldn't be a lot if hassle the only way they will treat customers with any respect is if we all move some will even pay you £100 to move to them which should pay for the time it takes to change your DD's over.

Take your custom elsewhere! Shop around, you want a transfer and your daughter wants to open an account.

Is she on the electoral roll? If not, that would explain the refusal.

Good question,

We have lived here many years but we tried to open the account the day after her 18th birthday so perhaps she is not yet on the electoral roll but surely the banks would realise that being just 18 and we did provide some paperwork with her address on

Go for a Cooperative account. I switched from Natwest and they are brilliant (despite there not being a branch nearby). If you read the various forums they accept more people than other banks as well.

I got fed up with the incorrect data, sales calls and never ending f**k ups of Natwest - even their staff were dejected by their ancient computer systems.

Surely you don't need to be 18 to open one? I had one from when I was 12 and a debit card from 16 (or maybe younger).

Just choose another bank.

The papers that come regularly to ask you to update the electoral roll ask you if there is anyone 16 plus in the house so they are added when they are 18 automatically.

You don't need to be on the roll, have any kind of credit score or anything to open a bank account. Mall that only matters when applying for credit

Maybe worth running an experian or similar check etc.

Make sure no I.D. fraudster has already been opening accounts in her name.

We had thought about a credit check but companies such as experion offer a 30 day trial which you can cancel but you need to enter payment details but can't as she has no bank account catch 22 ?

Sounds more like they've lost her paperwork entirely and don't want to own up (because if it's been left on a bus/train/in the post then that's a potential Data Protection Act issue) so it's easier to just say they don't want her as a customer.

I heard about HSBC refusing a current account recently, I assumed it was an electoral roll issue and they were being super-cautious.

I'm not surprised. Banks haven't been interested in ordinary retail customers for a long time.

If she'd been a student, or if she earned £50K+, she'd be OK.

What sort of account did she apply for?

I would go elsewhere. I had one of the very first Barclays SuperSavers accounts and it was just upgraded when i turned 16 and at 18 they were offering be all the interest free overdrafts i dream of. Didn't seem to understand that i only wanted a £600 one as a safety net.
