What to do with my mothers shares
Discussion
Im in the process of sorting a few bits and pieces of my mothers and among it is a couple of thousand Abbey National shares (or Santander as they now are).
Shes owned them for years and they are worth half of what they were a few years ago.
Anyway, I have no interest in trading with them as such I just want to either leave them as they are or swap them into something stable. If Santander are stable just leaving them as they are is preferable as I don't want to make any actual decisions for her if I can avoid it.
Any advice?

Don't forget that they are Spanish shares - not British shares.
That's one thing I don't really understand. The share certicifcate seems to be a UK one.Anyway, sorry- you're all correct- my question was very vague and I wasn't that certain what it was myself.
To ask a more direct question: if they were your shares would you prefer to keep them or cash them in and put the money in savings?

Santander operate their own nominee service that you can read about here:Anyway, sorry- you're all correct- my question was very vague and I wasn't that certain what it was myself.

Alternatively most UK stockbrokers will have little difficulty in handling it for you. However given the sums involved you would be best off approaching a low cost online broker.

Because of the large number of UK shareholders, Santander does print the paperwork in English - but they are stil Spanish shares. Any dividends received on these shares are technically "Foreign Income" for UK tax purposes.
