I'm in the process of renting a house in France for a family holiday. Typically French, the owner doesn't do electronic anything but has asked for a cheque for the deposit but is looking for it to be in Euros. Can I just write one on my UK chequebook?

You would be better off asking the guy for his SWIFT, IBAN, bank name and account name, then you can send him the money in euros directly via your bank or a broker.

He must know that Britons can't just write him a cheque - what does he normally do?

Do this but don't use your bank - use Transferwise. Ridiculously cheap and trustworthy.

The money goes from your account, out to a UK barclays account and is then transferred on to the recipient. It usually takes three days to arrive. I've used it several times to send money overseas and will definitely continue to do so seeing how little it costs and how they keep you and the recipient informed - as long as they have an email address.
