Faster Payments

If someone pays me for a car by Faster Payment & I see the funds arrive in my account is there any way that the payment can be recalled or am I safe to let the car go?

I'd like to say that it's simple: the money's yours so let the car go. (And it's how I operate my business with online payments.)

However, I've had Faster Payments into my bank account that have appeared, then been debited and withdrawn within a few minutes, only to reappear a little while later. Which leads me to believe there's definitely some mechanism for allowing the money to go out as well as in.

I'm pretty sure it wasn't under the control of the guy sending the money, but I never got an answer from the bank that properly explained it.
