Our son wants to get his car licence during this year, and so in early 2015 we would like to add him to our car policy, so he can use one of our cars.

Any idea roughly the cost upload we should expect ?

We're early 50s, full NCB, and one of the cars is a '£5k shed estate' we currently pay £300 / year. !

Cheers.

You will find it is cheaper to insure him on a new(er) car than an old one in most circumstances so although their is a risk of him trashing your P&J this could be one thing to consider if price is your only concern.

Generally, expect the insurance to be loaded by an extra 1.5k for a newly passed (named) driver.

Also, I am not saying you are planning on doing anything like this but you may wish to look up "insurance fronting" if he is to be the new main driver of your "shed". Whilst lots of people still do it, the Police are getting very hot on it now and if they even slightly smell that this could be the case it will be in front of the courts.

How times have changed - almost exactly 30 years ago I had to insure my first car. 23 years old, passed test 10 days before, TPFT £103...

The age is a much bigger factor than the experience. Adding a 22 y/o new driver will be a lot less than adding a 18 y/o driver with 1 yrs full licence.

Not sure how much it will cost...but Admiral will be the cheapest by a mile.

This is correct. My insurance is due for renewal at the end of the month and putting my wife on with her provisional licence actually made my insurance cheaper by about £50. Out of interest I got a quote with her as a newly passed driver and it added about £20 to my original premium. My wife is 30 and the car is a 1.6 Zafira but it does highlight that its age not experience that makes insurance for new drivers expensive.

Edit for appalling spelling.

Admiral a good call for young drivers / first car but as intimated by others be very wary of getting caught in the fronting scenario. Tbh best bet is to bite the bullet and get them insured in their name on a cheap car and hopefully get them to that magic 1year NCB.

OK, thanks all, will certainly check Admiral, and think about the car being 'sold' into his name. Cheers, BA
