Credit card fraud
Discussion
morning all
So, I wake up to two texts from Santander, stating that they need to talk to me about transactions on my card, and do I recognise these transactions:
I don't.
Call them up, go through security (which I fail...read on)
eventually pass after multiple questions.
I'm informed that there have been about 5K worth of transactions which I can't account for (all in the middle of the night, online only, and mostly for goods from European countries)
I'm assuming at this stage its my current account with them, as I lost my card a few months ago (noticed immediately, reported lost & new one issued no hassle)
However, the advisor drops in that its my credit card thats being used - which explains why I failed initial security - I was giving her the details of by debit card !
Now, this is even more curious.
I hardly ever use my credit card.
No need to - I carry a healthy balance in my current account.
So, we validate what was the last genuine purchase - which was for the rental deposit on a loan car (Enterprise) whilst my car was being recovered by the AA for repair.
All pretty run of the mill so far...
an open question - would any of you think it's suspicious that only since the Enterprise transaction this has happened ?
would you be contacting Enterprise ?
the really strange thing is that as I was on the phone to Santander I was walking to work;
got into the office, and a colleague who sits within earshot of me is having virtually exactly the same conversation I was having, with his bank !
Seem he was a victim last night too - (Lloyds though) - very similar pattern.
too co-incidental ?
Our only common thread is that we both use Apple Pay
comments welcome...

You hardly ever use your credit card, but you use Apple Pay ?
I presume you've linked your CC to Apple Pay ?
If so, have you had to re-enter your card details recently ? There's a known exploit using WiFi hotspots : http://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/mobility/mobile-ap...

I did exactly this job for a different bank 2 summers ago.
You find that's exactly what happens, somehow someone gets your card details, they use them on something small like candy crush or whatever to see if it gets noticed, then if not they immediately spend a whole bunch.
If they thought this was genuinely you, you'd know it.
As for the enterprise, it all depends where you've used the car, if someone was able to read it.
Office wise, I'd be worried that someone in the office is sneaking about stealing everyone's details.
