Hi,
A little advice would be very much appreciated.

My wife received a letter through the post afew days ago..

It's from the university of law limited and they have asked a solicitors firm to contact her for approx. £3500 and requested a £50 monthly payment until this 'debt' is clear. Their solicitors have applied for this via the county court.

Her initial thoughts were it may be a mistake in relation to her student loan which she took out when she was 19 years old (now 32), however she spoke to the student loan company and they're taking the payments from her monthly wage, and there are no problems there.

She then called the university of law and they took only her name and checked their records and said she had an outstanding debt of £2900.

They refused to give her any further details, and told her to speak with their solicitors as her account was now with collections.

So she phoned the solicitors, and was told they have been trying to reach her for years!?
She's NEVER resided at the address they stated that they held on their records. They said the courts had tracked her down at our current address as they've been unable to reach her, they also have an email address of hers that she's never held.
She explained that she had attended the university of Luton and had a bachelor of law degree from over ten years ago but had paid ALL her fees at the time.
They were being very vague about giving out any information, but she eventually managed to find out they sent a county court claim form to the 'registered address' they had on record in 2013, they'd also sent numerous emails to the address she's never held.

The fees were for a LPC (Legal practising course) that she apparently took at a university in Birmingham (where we live).
She asked them what was the dob they held and they didn't have one, nor did they give a record of any of her previous addresses.

She explained she'd only moved to Birmingham in 2009 and have NEVER taken a LPC course. However they said they will investigate and get back to us. I suspect we won't hear back from them, and will need to chase them up..
The lady she spoke with was very cynical and said she thought is was an 'unlikely coincidence' that someone with my wife's full name had also taken a law course!? WTF!

The only correct details they have of hers is her name!?

I suspect they've found someone who's name is the same as my wife's, in the same geographical location, and assumed its her? She can't for the life of her thing of anything else...

Does anyone have any advice what steps we should take going forward?, she's 6 months pregnant, and this looming over her head is the last thing we need.

As it says on the letter, you have to write to the court within 16 days, explaining this to them, otherwise you will have bailiffs come along. Send it special delivery to make sure.

Sounds like a complete cock up, somebody has done some data matching and got it wrong - and this from the University of Law.

Yep, reply Special Delivery, turn up at court with proof of identity, get it sorted.

If the University of Law don't apologise and resolve it PDQ, try claiming some costs at the Litigant in Person rates.

This was my first thought. Although I was surprised to hear the university of law actually exists

Follow the instructions and let it run it course in the courts. Years ago I had a dispute with the DVLA, where I was right they were wrong, I was never the owner of the vehicle concerned, spent time trying to resolve it, in the end I just said no problem go to court, put a file together with all the facts proof of residency etc. Their solicitor phoned me a week before the case came to court and asked why I was willing to go to court on such an open and shut case, as in addition to the fines I supposedly owed I would get court and legal fees added, and as they knew my address and employer they would get the money through attachment of earnings, and as it would now be criminal I would be struck off by my profession. I told him the evidence I had on me not being the person, they sent some one around to my office for a copy of my file, phoned me the next day informing me the case was dropped, problem resolved and offering to pay my legal fees.
