Chaps,
Feel fairly stupid asking this given I used to deal with currency trading daily, but it's been long enough that I need to.
Given I couldn't have picked a worse time to do this transaction as the rate is miserable, I'd like to make the best of a bad situation and not get 1.42 or something stupid. Any recommendations for a decent currency broker that will come in higher than HIFX et al (who I normally put my smaller transactions through). The brokers I used to use have been swallowed up by bigger ones I've no experience with so it'd be nice to take one on recommendation. There was a chap on PH who I hoped to use but I've long since dumped the email account I had used when I chatted with him. c
Also welcome any speculation on just how long it may be worth holding off to get a better rate. It's putting the brakes on a deal I've got lined up over here but anything less than 1.45 feels like a bumming.
Appreciate it.

Another vote for transferwise.
They give you the actual FX market rate and then charge a low fee. you can also lock in a rate and then have up to 24hrs to 'fund' the transfer which you can also cancel, so you can play the market to some degree to get the best rate within that 24hr window.
current offer is $73,110 for £50k which includes a fee of £250 and a rate of 1.469
