Do they still exist? I think everyone uses credit cards these days. Halifax credit cards have no surcharge for foreign use.

Currency at sensible rates can be bought from Marks & Spencer or the Post Office. It's cheapest if you buy it with cash - yes, real folding money.

Or if in London try cityforex or Thomas exchange, often get a discount/pref rate if you work in financial services/bank/insurance co too!

Why don't you take some travellers cheques ?
Do these still exist? With two signatures and everything? I don't think I've seen one in about 30 years.

Also I've found just using the cash point abroad better than a pre-loaded card when all said and done as long as you get out a half decent chunk each time

+1 for using an ATM when you get there using a Halifax Clarity Credit Card. No commission and I've found the rate of exchange unbeatable. Just pay it off as quickly as you can as it attracts interest from the day of withdrawal. Interest rate is low though (12% ish).

I've used FairFX for euros as recommended by MoneySupermarket and they are very competitive and reliable:

And if you order more than £750's worth, delivery is free.
