Anyone else have trouble with HSBC and their horrendously complex security. The kids have their current accounts with them and we spent about an hour at a branch a few weeks ago getting the apps set up.

Now we keep locking the account and the call centre is less than pleasant to deal with. Weighing up closing and moving to a nicer bank with more appropriate security controls.

Yes, I know it is there for my benefit but it's all a bit OTT.

Disclosure.. I work in security

I've never had a problem with HSBC until they decided to allow a password option for their two factor auth process with no option to opt out.

Not sure what issues you are having but when I've needed to contact them they've been pretty good.. pro ably the only reason I stay with them tbh.

Am on FirstDirect who have similar security, works flawlessly. My wife called them, using my daughter's details. At no point did they challenge and they were pretty rude and condescending.

Account reset and worked fine. Hour later failed again.

I also work in I.T. security. I understand the requirement for Multi-factor authentication however it needs to be a seamless process and work the whole time.

I was with Lloyds and opened an account with First Direct. I had so many issues with them regarding the security side of things that I ended up closing the account and going back to Lloyds.

It's horses for courses!

Ah! HSBC.

I have been locked out of their telephone banking for about three years now.
They 'improved' the security so that changing direct debits on mortgage payments required you to recall the starting mortgage balance. Mine was something like 140567.68 (transfer from another mortgage).
I got it wrong and was locked out immediately.

It is very comforting to know that a deranged hacker would be unable to phone up HSBC and pay off my mortgage for me.

Indeed.. I find it seemless usually except for today where I was going to switch my mortgage and their mortgage site doesn't use the 2FA it asks for the password! Lolffs

I have 7 accounts with HSBC and use apps on my smartphone and tablet daily to manage things. Telephone banking is OK but prefer Internet banking. Never had an issue so far and so glad they got rid of that stupid key fob thingy to access your accounts.

HSBC works fine for me on Internet banking and the app. Barclays is a spectacular nightmare. The co op is a bit painful but nothing like Barclays

First Direct here. Both Internet and telephone have always been fine.

First Direct here too

Since 1992 for me and 1997 for the missus

Joint mortgage with them since 2002 too

Phoned to remortgage last week as our fix runs out soon and they are now demanding proof of ID from the wife
Not from me

Her passport and having banked with them for years will not suffice
She needs to provide evidence from a prescriptive list
Being on the electoral roll scores a big fat zero

All of her bank accounts are with them
All of our utilities are in my name - lesson learned here
All of our mobiles are PAYG
Apart from the mortgage we have no loans or credit

They are now getting arsey about authorising the remortgage
They are also about to lose our custom

Before 1992 I used with the MIdland bank for 8y
So 32y of continuous custom from me appears to count for nuffink

Sigh

We notified RBS via internet banking that we would be using our cards in three different countries, and three different currencies, within 18 hours.

After flying Sofia-Luton then Luton-Tenerife we tried to take Euros out of a hole-in-the-wall, her card came up "Transaction declined".

Telephone banking informed us that they had noticed "Possible Fraudulent Activity" because the card was used in three different countries on the same day.

My card, on the same joint account, worked fine.

What's on the prescriptive list?
