Hi guys - never posted in the finance section but read it with much interest as the variety of savers, investors, spenders fascinates me....

So despite working a regular 9-5 job with a fairly decent income, I have always had a hankering to run my own business but have no real idea what to do nor the guts to do it quite yet (i.e. quit my job)....

So I wanted to see if you guys had any thoughts on how i get a little exposure whilst keeping my day job....angel investing/seeding websites?

I have a few BTLs & whilst I appreciate there are still many fans out there, I would like to diversify my risk a little and try something new.

I apologise for the generic question but hopefully won't get a wrath of abuse if this is a repeated question...

I suppose the first question is this: can you afford to lose all of the £30-50k, would that change your life significantly or not?

I am a point now that I would be willing to loose it but not stupidly - a calculated risk - yes; a black or red gamble - probably not..

It's not clear what you want to achieve?

At the risk of sounding like a complete nonse, I am actually not bothered about immediate return or high return.

Otherwise, I suppose clever stock selection in the equity markets would achieve that if that was the goal - it's just too vague and distant for me......

I suppose I would like to invest in a business and see it grow - possibly learn from any mistakes/experiences - hence why I am not after immediate return (plus why I appreciate the risk of losing it all).

I guess what I am trying to achieve is a venture capital start but on a small scale.... By the time retirement comes, maybe have a few companies that you have invested and possibly helped grow.....are these angel investing seminars/websites best option?

Not sure if any of that made sense, just trying to move away from having 4-5 houses as a pension pot.......everyone seems to have some foot in that game....(apologies if that caused offense to anyone)

Forget investing in someone else.
Invest in yourself.

Use the money to upskill yourself, become and expert, find customers, create a business etc.
That is the lowest risk, surest way to wealth.

Lots of time and effort, but £30-50k is more than enough to get you there if used right.

You could invest in stocks and shares but if it is 100% a career change your after re-training may be required depending which sector you work in. BTLs in my opinion are good and safe investments and pretty much a guarenteed return and as you've said a nice pension pot
