Hi, I rented a car on holiday in Canada, end of July, I paid for it through a third party company who act like a broker for the actual place I rented the car from. They gave me a voucher to print off and show to get my rental, they obviously organise with the hire car company my booking, all's fine so far, holiday was great, car was fine.

Now, 4 months after I've returned the car, I've had a charge on my credit card for some random ammount from the hire car place itself, its about £100 more than what it was I paid the broker company. When queried with the hire company, they have told me, the broker company I used have refused to pay for my rental and that the broker is going through bankruptcy at the moment.

They said they've tried everything with the broker company, and are asking me to contact the broker company myself to try and get a refund from them, or contact my credit card company to get a refund from the broker (not from the hire company though) they've even offered to help.

Am I missing something, or is it looking like they've been fked off by the broker company during the bankruptcy proceedings, and have decided to go for an easier target I.e. Me, to try and reclaim some money. As far as I'm concerned, I paid the broker company to get me a car, I got a car, that should be the end of it at my end. The hire company is a client of the broker company, and if the broker company isn't paying their bills I really don't see how it's my problem.

I know my next port of call is to phone my credit card company and ask for a chargeback with the hire company. Just wondering if anyone had any insight into a situation like this, or even if what the hire company doing is even legal?

Thanks

How did the hire company get your card details if you paid the broker?
If you gave it to them for excess, damage waver etc, it's probably in their
terms to cover any loss they incur.
If you didn't give the the card details but the broker did that's fraud.

Gave them it as deposit for any damages to the car.

If it was paid for on a credit card, i would be contacting my credit card company to highlight that this was not an authorised amount and let their team do what they do best. Remember, when you spend on a credit card, you are spending the lenders money and not your own and therefore will be protected to an extent.

Similar happened to my old man. Got it sorted in the end by making a claim under section 75 on his credit card.

Have contacted credit card company who have put a hold on that charge and are sending me the forms out.
