A friend of mine in Japan is in need of some money -- they have a Japanese bank account.

What is the cheapest way to transfer money ?

Your regular bank will do it, for much fees. You'll get better rates at cityforex .co.uk or Transferwise but be warned, doing a one-time transfer to a domestic Japanese account can be a bit of a 'mare with getting the details precisely correct.
