Stocks & Shares for a novice

Not knowing much about all this I thought I would ask you guys.
For example if I put 20k into Baillie Gifford Shin, looking at their past 5 years they have gone up 339% so in 5 years the 20k would grow to 67K plus the 20k first invested. I know you must not rely on the past years but use them as a guide, also they may be high risk.

So is it really that easy, you could even spread the 20k over 6 or 7 companies with 300-400% to spread the bets as they say.
Also looking at other shares there are loads out there at a 100% increase in the last 5 years why pick them at only 100% maybe - less risk?
If you have 20k and did not care if you lost it then I'm assuming BGS would be worth a punt.
I know this is a minefield and there is tons of information out there, I have used the 20k as as an example so don't worry I'm not going to do something silly, I just wanted an initial response from people in the know.

That rate of increase is likely not to be maintained - otherwise everyone would have bought them by now:

It is easy as pie to load up some money into an account and invest. However do some reading first as your thoughts on shares and rises is scary to say the least! It really doesnt work the way you think it might. You need to research thoroughly on the companies you are investing in (ignoring to some degree what has come before) and work out if you think they will grow in value. Past performance is not indiciative of the future.
Otherwise you may as well just go down the casino with £20K, you could possibly do way better than trying to pick companies based on large past increases.
For what its worth, I personally use H.L and have found them absolutely fine. No problems so far.
