Anyone ever paid for something and not had the money debited
Discussion
I thought my card details had been stolen many years ago when a payment for several hundred quid showed up on my credit card that I wasn't expecting. Turned out it the was the car stereo I'd bought something like 7 months earlier that for some reason hadn't gone through at the time. So be aware it might turn up later.

My old gym membership, went there for 2 years, set up a direct debit, nothing was ever 'taken' from my account.
Same, but a combined gym and golf membership in a fancy marriot, I have told them about it a couple of times but they never bothered taking it, we're talking 1k plus a year. I even got a bunch of free golf and buggy passes, enjoy 35% off in the bar and restaurant and 20% off everything in the golf shop.
I'm 8 months in, just hope they don't backdate it all.

Many years ago I worked on a computer system that did the card authorisations for several high street stores, one of which was a well known music/dvd store.
The transactions were downloaded from each store overnight and sent to the bank for processing. One of the stores up north got flooded out in a big storm and the store computer was destroyed which meant that everyone who paid by card in that store the previous day didn't ever get charged.

We bought a cooker from John Lewis and it took an age to appear on our CC, so much so they phoned us to get our details again.
There is some anomaly that the payment is only authorised for so long so if the product isn't delivered in a set time (ours came straight from the manufacturer) the authorisation expires and they have to process the payment again.

That happened in our village garage - everyone who bought fuel that day on a card got it free. I'd no idea these things weren't "live".The transactions were downloaded from each store overnight and sent to the bank for processing. I can't recall a card or bank transfer ever not working but going back years a few things by cheque, including car insurance one year, never got cashed.
If you paid by chaps then the bank will be sending the money and debiting your bank account. It is entirely possible that someone has messed up at the bank and transposed the account numbers so the dealer may have been paid but from someone elses bank account.
if the bank find out they will debit the money even if there isn't an overdraft in place.
easiest thing to do is to call the dealer and check they did receive the money. Then call your bank and query it.

Not quite the same .... but about 15 yrs I was sent on a 3 conference along with some other colleagues.
Hotel rooms were meant to have been booked and paid for by work, but upon arrival they had been reserved but not paid for.
I put it all on my card (about £1500 worth if I remember correctly) and contacted work who agreed to pay the hotel the next day.
The next day hotel reception confirmed work had paid - and the hotel refunded my card.
When I got my next bank statement the hotel had refunded me twice.
Expecting to be notified of the mistake and be told the hotel wanted their money back I held the money in my account for about 18 months, but I never heard a thing - so the Mrs & I took a long exotic holiday

I bought a Dyson from a well known stores website, for one reason or another it was not delivered, then they were out of stock. So cancelled the online transaction, was refunded in full and picked up a slightly different version from the store. About 3 days later the cancelled vacuum arrived! Phoned them to try and get it collected but never happened!
