i've been stung twice in a month with card fraud. The second was a replacement set of cards that I'd only had a few days. The first was cardholder not present transactions at a london cab firm, about 10 transactions over 3 days, starting on the same day as I had been down there for work. Card company sorted it all, with only the inconvenience of updating card details all over the place.

Second time is more worrying. 3 transactions made locally at a cafe in london, on a day when i was in manchester, and these were supposedly chip and PIN ones, which means the credit card company are starting to say this would be impossible without having my actual card present where the transaction took place. They've said it is impossible to clone the chip.

So, are they just inept (they definitely are at least, considering I couldn't be in london at manchester at the same time, and it never got flagged up) or could it be a mistake and these are transactions not intended for my card?

Is this a cafe that you do use or have used in the past? It could be that they are slow processing their transactions.
I once bought chocolate from a well known high street store and they didn’t take the money from my account for 3 months!

Switch banks, for visa reasons my daughter and I have a joint current account she uses, she took the wrong (my) cash card to Indonesia on Sunday, I bought petrol in Singapore today on my credit card with same bank, she then withdrew cash on the card she had with her in Bali a few hours latter and the bank rang within 5 minutes asking me why I was using cards in different places, Last week I did 400 miles on my bike in a day bought 4 lots of petrol on the same card, in a day, 4th transaction got a call. they'd certainly ask if I was 300 miles away in a few hours on the same card.

contactless cards can still be used after the card is cancelled if that helps.
A number of merchants don't process payments until the end of the day.

I used to run 4 different cards and one of them was defrauded 3 times in a fairly short space of time. Never had any issues with other cards before or since.

You'd have thought some of the transactions would be easy to trace - one was flight tickets. Another was currency exchange in a bank. Card issuer never seemed bothered in the slightest - after the 3rd time I gave up with it.

A big uk bank sent me a new debit card. First time I used it was a contactless payment 250 miles from my home address and not somewhere I’d been near before. Didn’t trigger anything which I felt was pretty poor.

On the flip side another bank blocked by domain name renewal by credit card every year despite me asking them to whitelist it. I eventually closed the account for that and other reasons.

after 18 months of collecting I'm about 6 months away from 2 x 'upper class' return flights to new york so i was kind of hoping to not have to throw that completely away.

the worrying thing about all of this is that because none of the 'good guys' know for sure how individual instances come about, it's hard to come up with practical and actionable advice for customers to protect themselves in a way that still retains and acceptable level convenience in everyday life. You end up in a 'shoes off at the security gates' model where you end up doing more and more and more to try and guard against malicious behaviour, that the whole thing just ends up being massively inconvenient and unattractive.

As a society we are now so dependent on credit that it's not even like most people can just cut up their cards. Even those who don't need credit as such are encouraged to use it because they get something from it - see my post above about reward points.

If a terrorist wanted to threaten our 'way of life' and really piss us off, he could just steal our identity a few times a year - even if they didn't use it for any financial gain. That level of disruption to normal life would break many people!
