Does anyone else think it’s rather quaint that many of the Far East stock exchanges have a lunch break?
I can’t help imagining all those Japanese, Chinese, Taiwanese etc traders sitting down with their lunchboxes and comparing what sandwiches their mums have made for them today. Is there an hour or so of feverish trading as they swap crisps, chocolate biscuits, and other snacks? Is there a snack exchange - the Snackdaq?
I’m curious why it’s mostly only the Far East markets that do this. What cultural quirk has dictated that they consider a lunch break so important that trading stops, but the rest of the world doesn’t?

I've no idea whether ther is some deeper technical reason for it, but it seems like a fairly civilised thing to do, to be honest.
Look where the work-life balance of your average financier has gone over the years. I wouldn't be in favour of tipping the balance any further. Maybe that's just me, though.
Edited to add - also, in this day and age, it doesn't stop me doing anything I would do if there wasn't a lunch break. I can still place my orders over lunch, I just need to wait until after lunch to see if they're executed.

Slightly OT...
We close for 1 hour at lunch. The number of customers who complain is unreal. It is fully explained on our website / store front etc. Yet still people complain especially those who turn up at 12:05 to find we are closed till 13:00.
That said there are plenty of businesses round here that still close on a Wednesday..

I almost wish my employer had this policy. It's rare to have a client offer to meet me at any time other than lunch time.
"Let's meet around lunch time tomorrow?"
No, let's not, because that's when I'll be eating my bloody lunch. Come in at 12, or come in at 2, but for the love of god let me have at least thirty minutes somewhere between the two to eat a sandwich.

Or, to put it another way... why is it so important to trade over lunch, rather than waiting a little extra time to put your trade in so someone can have a better work-life balance?romeogolf said:

Why dont you have the meeting with the client at a restaurant? "Let's meet around lunch time tomorrow?"

Problem solved.

Or when someone disturbs mew when i'm eating my lunch to ask something that could clearly wait.

Me and my wife stop for lunch everyday, we meet somewhere close to both our works in Bristol Centre and have a hot meal and then a walk.
Stuffed am I sitting at a desk with a sandwich, when I can go out for an hour and get food and air.
I see it the same as they do, you need to recharge and walk away before you go screen blind. The point when everything looks the same and you are getting nowhere so time out focus the mind again.
