Tax relief on commuting to one place of work
Discussion
You choose where to live and where to work. HMRC view is if you choose to live a long way from where you work it is entirely your own responsibility to pay the cost. If you get asked to work somewhere else temporarily by your company then it is not your choice and, therefore, a different matter.

Arguably people who choose to travel a long way should be taxed more as they're causing pollution and clogging up the roads. :smiley:Sheepshanks said:

For me to get a similar sized property close to work I would need a massive pay rise. Even then what security to you have.
At my last company I was part of a new team, one bloke moved to be near work. 2 years later the contract we were working on was lost to a competitor. The bloke is now moving his family half way across the country to where the TUPE role is.
His costs must be approaching 20k (after tax) and his kids have moved school twice....f
