I've rarely had need to contact HMRC, but generally in the past it has been a particularly unpleasant affair with rude/unhelpful phone operators doubting every word you say & generally being arsey.

Anyhow last week I had to call them again so braced myself for the normal. Got through to some lady from Scouseland. Like a breath of fresh air very friendly, said at first she didn't think she could help, but then said hang on a minute let me see. Asked for certain information, I said haven't got a clue, but it was definitely before a certain date. She said don't worry, I can sort that out, changed my coding manually over the phone. Then she said ooh don't think thats right, lets check a few other things, which we did, but it was correct. All sorted very nicely & quickly. Amazed very pleasant experience.

Are they actually trying to be helpful these days?

It looks like they have got major issues with their new system. I guess the level of problems has forced them to setup teams to deal with. I had to call them last month when they decided to change my code from 562L to 768K.

I have now gone through two levels of complaint teams and each apologised profusely and were fairly open about the problems.
