Debit card fraud

Well this happened this week...i've only used a debit card for some 20+ years and never had an issue, and thats included many many trips abroad to far flung places.
Anyway, bank cards been stopped and i'm getting refunded for the payment made (they stopped others thank god) but its got me wondering whether I need to be conscious about anything else?
Funny as I was ignoring an automated message from barclays all day yesterday thinking it was a fraud jobby to find it wasnt!
