I received a refund for overpayment of NICs taken from pay for work completed in March this year.

I presume that 40% tax will have been taken off the refund before the remaining amount was sent to me by cheque.

Which tax year will that 40% tax payment have be taken from?

Or will the refund be a gross payment which is added to this year's taxable income?

Assuming you are paye tax and NI are calculated independently on gross earnings so a NI refund will not attract further tax assessment.
