Anyone remember Household Mortgage Corporation and the adverts with Barry Norman?
My first mortgage (1987-1995) was with HMC, and following stories here of people who didn't know they had PPI but actually did, I thought I'd enquire.
HMC went into liquidation last week and Grant Thornton referred me to GE Money who are dealing with claims.
Yesterday I got this e-mail from them:
Secondly, they ask for details but then say they are closing the case - a case of careless copy/paste surely?

This raises two issues for which I'd appreciate your thoughts before approaching them. First, I may have binned correspondence from that long ago. If they have binned their records too, (a) are they allowed to, and (b) is that the end of the matter? With the information you have provided, we are not able to identify a GE Money account for you. GE will have at some point bought the HMC book and are now dealing with the fall out which they are naturally not going to be too enamoured with.
They can delete records once they are six years old, we don't, but legally you can after six years...........which they are likely to have done knowing the storm coming their way from their HMC inherited clients.
Therefore, they are bouncing it back to you.......the onus is on you now to evidence your HMC mortgage and the PPI sale.........

An excellent summary!
Despite a thorough search I can't find anything here with HMC on it.
I phoned the solicitors who acted for me on the purchase; they destroy records after 15 years but suggested the Deeds might have the data.
Is it possible to get a copy of the Deeds of a house I no longer own?

Bump - would Land Registry have anything useful in this respect?
I guess the Deeds, if they mentioned of my period of ownership and the charge HMC had on the property, would not make mention any PPI. Correct?
If so that's the end of the trail!

You'd need to speak to a conveyancer I would have thought...........I'd imagine there may be a record of who held the charge for those years.......there certainly would be any reference to the details of the mortgage or PPI.....

Ta - did you mean 'would' or 'would not'?Can any conveyancer do this - and how would he begin to find out where the documentation is?
