Hi and wonder if anyone knows the definitive answer on purchase protection both online and in store. . . I have heard that paying for items over £100 with a credit card offers more protection that a debit card but unsure if there are clauses exclusions to that belief? Also, when it comes to online I pay with Paypal and instore with Google Pay but both are linked to my debit card, should this be changed to a credit card or do they offer protection too? I know it's a minefield so wondered who has the answer, maybe you of you guys? Cheers

Yes Credit card is by far the best protection as they would be jointly responsible for purchases over £100 should it be faulty and you will be protected. Debit cards do not offer the same protection although in certain circumstances where services or products are not received you can initiate a charge back.

I am not sure how the addition of Google/Apple pay etc would effect this as they would be a middle man in the transaction. It may make no difference or loads.

PayPal offer their own buyer protection. Again, not sure how paying from the funding source of Credit card via Paypal would work in terms of the protection offered by the credit card company. Hopefully someone can help you with that aspect.

We used credit card protection for the first time this year. It was not an easy process and it took months but in the end the CC must have some how put pressure on the supplier of the item and they sent us a letter out of the blue saying they were issuing a full refund and were coming to collect the item. If it was on a debit card we would have got nothing.

I have used the protection for credit cards (section 75) a number of times. The most recent that come to mind -
- 18 month old dead PC monitor from PC World
- 4 year old irreparable fridge freezer from Currys
- 6 month old dead mobile phone from Phones4U (after they had gone bust)

Didn't have any problems with any of the claims. For the monitor and the phone Amex just put a full credit on my account and for the fridge freezer Samsung were buying it back for about 1/3 of the original cost which I thought was a bit low so Nationwide Credit Card agreed to pay another 1/3.

In all three cases it was simply a case of speaking to the card company, they sent out a form, filled it in, and sending it back.

In none of the cases did I speak to the retailers, Phones4U had gone bust and as for Currys / PC World, well I couldn't be bothered wasting my time.
