Home Insurance
Discussion
Hi,
We're currently insured with NFU and pay an annual premium of about £750 (buildings and contents).
We had an attempted burglary a year or so ago where (as it turned out) some local youths stole the kids' quadbike, my lad's CRF50, a dune buggy and some petrol powered garden tools (strimmer and hedgecutters)
I was working away at the time and called NFU expecting it to be sorted; however, we discovered then that the quad and buggy weren't covered as they were both over 50cc.
As I say, it turned out that some local scrotes had taken the stuff and the police recovered it from some woodland adjacent to the house. The idiots had damaged the barrels on the quad and buggy - which had to be replaced, but other than that, everything was o.k.
Anyway, we tried later to have these items added to the policy (I was quite angry with NFU) but they couldn't do it and suggested we get separate insurance.
I'm looking for suggestions for insurers that could do the whole lot. We tried Hiscox; however, they were significantly more expensive - for no additional cover.
Would be interested to hear what other companies people on here use.
Thanks

I don’t know if it fits your exact circumstances but we moved to John Lewis insurance a year or so ago. Our premium fell from about £900 pa to £400 pa, although this year’s renewal has seen it increase to about £550 with the usual waffle from the helpline people about why.
I’ve given up with online comparator tools as they invariably have one final check box which requires me to install lots on new locks on ancient doors and windows. I don’t want that cost and hassle. John Lewis seemed more relaxed on that sort of stuff.

Thanks All.
I'm not looking to increase premiums significantly. I'll give John Lewis a try. To be honest, save for the Kids' Petrol bits, my wife's Jewellery (£15k, £5k and £3k) and a Tag that I have (perhaps £3k), we don't really have any special requirements.
I'm not stupid enough to think that the £150 policies would cover us, but as it is, £750 isn't really giving us the coverage we need.
I think I'd rather remove the Quad etc. and just keep the rest of it covered (which is where we are now to be honest).
Thanks for your reply John. What (in your opinion) are the differences between Hiscox and NFU?

What type of NFU Household policy do you have ? I ask as NFU's Bespoke Home Insurance policy appears to cover Quads and the over 50cc exclusion seems to only be in relation to motor bikes.This is their wording within their policy in relation to what is covered/excluded re Motorised Vehicles:
MOTORISED VEHICLES
Any mechanically propelled vehicle and their keys and accessories or caravan or trailer attached thereto, other than:
• DOMESTIC garden equipment;
• electrically powered -invalid scooters, -wheelchairs, -pedal cycles, -toys, -golf trolleys and buggies;
•quad bikes
•motor bikes under 51 cc
• model planes, boats and trains not intended for the carriage of people
Have they provided you with the relevant Exclusion within the Policy Wording ?
For the sort of items and premiums being talked about here I'd be inclined to buy some better locks/chains rather than spending more on insurance cover. Not least because premiums start out manageable but have a nasty habit of increasing sharply if you get any more claims.
It can also be cheap and straightforward to fit a hidden cut-out switch in the ignition system.

We had the discussion afterwards around the coverage and they said that it's supplied to Farmers/Landowners - but only very reluctantly. The rules around motorised items has changed apparently. I'm told it's to do with public liability insurance too - even though they're not used on the public highway.
The little Honda 50cc is covered, as is the ride-on mower (which they didn't take).
We have improved security and having been born and rasied on a council estate, I did take the opportunity to confront the little scrotes and one of the Dads. I'm not sure the other little prick even knows who his dad is.
