I made a pension contribution to my DB scheme in May 2017.

I did some IR35 contract work for another employer that year, but they fecked up tax deduction from my pay.

They took ~£3k less from me in tax than they should have.

Consequently I didn't get that £3k back in tax relief from my pension contribution that tax year.

I ticked the box that said I'll pay for any arrears by cheque, not through my tax code on my SA return (as I always do).

I've recently noticed that HMRC has changed my tax code for my main employer and are clawing £3k tax back this year from my pay.

Obviously the initial problem was caused by the second employer fecking up tax deduction, but do I have any right to moan at HMRC about this?

I'm now paying tax that I should have paid in the previous tax year, but then got back as part of my pension contribution tax relief for that tax year.

I'm not totally gutted about it, more like slightly annoyed.

If there's a chance that I could get the £3k back then I'll have a go.

If not then I'm sure that £3k will be spent wisely by HMG and I'll put it down to experience and move on.

I think you have an inept accountant.

Eric is always of great help in matters like these, but given the deadline feel free to PM me and I will get our company accountant to quickly go over your return.

If you owe it then you owe it, but sucking it up if you don't is not right.

Thanks for the offer Julian.

I'll give them a call first - just need to find an hour to set aside rolleyes.
