How is conceivable that this month I've got an £800 tax rebate coming through for overpaying tax and yet I receive my self-assessment tax calculation (late, I know) for 17-18 and it is displaying £1477 underpaid tax from earlier years? How does that happen?

Because, basically they haven't got a clue
14 different notices of coding for the year 2018 - 19 (so far)
and 4 already for 2019 - 20......

Told them months ago about a deduction they were making for health insurance should be removed as I was no longer working (retired) and yes it's still on for the coming year. I sent a cheque to cover alleged underpayment on the 1st March, it's still not registering with them so that's another notice of coding on it's way...

No wonder Starbucks et al can get away with everything, it's easier to screw up the individual.

Agreed. No clue.

I now pay an accountant £300 annually to deal with this for me - and advise the best way to maximize my tax efficiencies. Got fed up of having to stump up 4k every January due to HMRC ineptness. I now make a saving.
