HMRC bloody useless and incompetent. Start part time job, 3rd March 2019. First weeks salary, zero tax code, pay tax. Second weeks pay, tax code 39, pay tax. Wrong. No tax payable year 2017/2018 for me. Call company pay office. Can’t help, call HMRC they say. Go to HMRC on line. Confirm no tax payable this tax year. Can earn £5840. So why give me tax code 39, not 584? Check on line each week, tax code keeps changing, goes 39, 58, 62, 88. Call tax office. Confirm no tax to be paid, don’t know why wrong tax issued. Can they change it. Yes, but will take 5 weeks. Why? Because they have millions of tax payers on their computer! Tax code won’t be change before financial years ends. Have to wait until July for tax refund. Thus lending government my money tax free for 5 months. Try to complain online. Complaints system not working. Finally find the email of Sir Jonathan Thompson, HMRC boss. ( perm.secs@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk ) Get reply saying should have a response by 11 April 2019. Too late to sort out tax code this financial year. Brilliant!

I'm fairly sure HMRC have some slightly more pressing issues than a 2 parts of nothing tax code issue, you'll get your refund so why the big problem?

Rubbish. They're there to sort out taxpayers issues. That's their job/function. What's their big issue then?

There's your mistake.

What they are actually there to do is get a much money into the governments coffers a possible. Sorting out your issues is only relevant if it helps in their mission.

Exactly. They should get it right 1st time and if they don't, fix THEIR errors in a timely fashion.

Could be worse I have to pay them upfront (Payment on account) just in case I earn. Obviously Government needs the cash for MPs salaries or something.

Disagree somewhat.... I got a cheque through the post in feb with a refund for overpaid SA tax.... completely unprompted.

Reglard.... account payments are absolute bks... makes me angry every year :-)

I once had a visit from HMRC, they wouldn't tell me why, but when she arrived my book keeper and I sat down with her and of course the first question was "Why the visit?"
"You haven't been paying your VAT"
Book keeper and I exchange questioning glances.
"Er, yes I have, I'll prove it" So I got out my bank statements and showed all the payments leaving my accounts and going to theirs.
"Oh, i'm sorry there must be some mistake at our end"
So basically they had thousands coming in from an unknown source, just accepted it and not linked it with me. She hurriedly flicked through my books, missed some glaring errors (from a previous shoddy book keeper) and left rather quickly.

On another occasion they were chasing me for a sub contractors form from 5 yrs previous which they didn't have, the taxes had been paid, it was just the paperwork which was missing. I rung them up and explained that after 5yrs there was no way on earth I knew what was on this form, they were unlikely to get it and that after all this time wouldn't common sense prevail and the demands stop?
"Mr 227" The chap on the other end wearily replied "This is HMRC, we don't do common sense" laugh

I find their service pretty good on the whole - I'd rather they focused their resources on tax evasion than such small tax payer detriment as the OP's.

You kidding. Private Eye has long exposed the blatant tax fiddling going on with the mega-rich and others. Seems as if the talk about stopping it is bks.

We had the exact opposite happen, our VAT account suddenly had £120,000 paid in, but not by us. We kept telling them but they said it must be right and we were now in credit. However we still kept paying in what we owed and eventually six months later it disappeared as though it was never there, with not a word from HMRC.

The first payment on Account is made in July. So, if you had a Payment on Account for tax year 2018/19, it would have been payable in July 2018. The second would have been payable by 31 January 2019.

By July and certainly by January, you should have known whether the payments on account are realistic or not. If you think they were too high you are totally at liberty to reduce them to a more realistic level - even Zero if appropriate.

Further screw up by HMRC. Just received a letter from pensions company that says HMRC have just given them a tax code of 12L, So I'll be paying tax on that now as well. Incompetent isn't good enough to describe them.

It's just coming to the end of 2018/2019.
